Hansal Mehta began his career as a director in the ‘90s and he was a good filmmaker in the early stages of his career. It was, however, only after he decided to take a sabbatical and experience life that he became a great one. Mehta was born on April 29, 1968, in Mumbai. He did his schooling at Rose Manor International School. He graduated from Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Technology, Pune. After graduation, he worked in Fiji before returning to India in the early ‘90s. In 1993, he made his debut as a director on television with the cookery show ‘Khana Khazana.’ Mehta continued making shows for television throughout the later part of the ‘90s before making his feature film debut in 2000. His first film was the Manoj Bajpayee starrer ‘Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!,’ which attracted praises for its portrayal of the fringes of Mumbai. After ‘Chhal’ in 2002, Mehta hit a snag and decided to take a sabbatical in 2008. He returned to filmmaking with ‘Shahid’ in 2012. The film won him the National Award for Best Director. His next film ‘City Lights’ (2014) was a favorite in various film festivals in India and abroad. He continued to make waves as a filmmaker with films such as ‘Aligarh’ (2015), ‘Omerta’ (2017), etc.
